Stephen Lawrence was not the first young black man murdered in the borough of Greenwich, southeast London in the early 1990s – it was called ‘the racist murder capital of Britain’. One earlier victim was Rolan Adams, who was also stabbed while waiting for a bus. As the Macpherson Inquiry into Stephen Lawrence's murder found, the two cases overlapped in other ways.
