One of three official advisers to the Macpherson Inquiry into the murder of Stephen Lawrence, Dr John Sentamu was then the Anglican Bishop for Stepney. As a young man he had practised law in Uganda but fled the regime of dictator Idi Amin and on settling in the UK entered the priesthood. He would later become Archbishop of York and a life peer.
